What is the age limit for the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon?
There is a minimum age limit of 18 for the full marathon and 14 for the half marathon. For the half marathon relay we rely upon the common sense of the parent/legal guardian and suggest that they consult with the child’s pediatrician for advice for anyone 17 years old and younger who is interested in participating.
For the kids races we rely upon the common sense of the parent/legal guardian for anyone 17 years old or younger interested in participating. If there are any questions about the suitability of any race for a particular child, we strongly suggest that the child’s pediatrician be consulted.
Age requirements are based on regulations by IMMDA. For further information and background visit the IMMDA Advisory Statement on Children and Marathoning. Anyone caught entering a false date of birth on their registration form will have their registration cancelled without refund.
Is there a time limit?
The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon is open to all participants of age who are able to finish in the following time frames: The course closes after 6 hours and 30 minutes for the full marathon and 3 hours and 15 minutes for the half marathon and relay (chip time). Participants wishing to complete their event within that time frame will need to maintain a 15 minute/mile or faster pace. After the time limit has been reached, streets will re-open to vehicular traffic, and participants still out on the course will be asked to move to the sidewalks or re-route. On-course support (aid stations) will close at this time.
Full marathon time limit: 6 hours and 30 minutes — The finish line will close at 2:30 p.m. In addition, all marathon participants must be at the Brighton Ave. and Ocean Blvd. intersection (mile 11.5) by 10:40 a.m. in order to continue the full marathon course. If arriving at that mark after 10:40 a.m., marathon participants will not be permitted to make the right turn onto Ocean Avenue and will be directed to finish the half marathon course.
Half marathon time limit: 3 hours and 15 minutes — All half marathon participants must complete the course (13.1 miles) in 3 hours and 15 minutes or less (chip time). There will be a cut off implemented at Mile 5.7. If participants do not reach this location by 9:15 a.m., they will not be permitted to turn left on Patten Ave, and will be directed to bear right to Florence Avenue. Runners will then turn left at Atlantic Avenue and rejoin the course as they turn right onto MacArthur Avenue at mile 8.3 (eliminating 2.3 miles from the course).
If you are unable to complete the entire 13.1 miles in less than 3 hours and 15 minutes, please either adjust your training plan to attain that level of performance, or create or join a team for the half marathon relay.
If you are still on the course after 3 hours and 15 minutes, keep in mind that the full marathoners may be coming in from behind you. We ask that you please make room for them.
Full marathon relay time limit: 3 hours and 15 minutes — All relay teams must complete the course (26.2 miles) with a combined time of 6 hours and 30 minutes or less (chip time).
Are walkers or athletes with disabilities welcome?
We are happy to announce that athletes in wheelchairs are welcome to register for both the full and half marathons. Athletes in wheelchairs (push rim and hand crank) are welcome to register for our full marathon as long as they do not exceed the speed limit, which is an average pace of 5:45 minute/mile and can finish within 6 hours and 30 minutes from the start of the race, which is an average pace of a 14:52-minute mile. The speed limit is to ensure that a safe distance is kept between the full and half groups and that the road and intersections are prepared and properly closed to outside traffic at the appropriate times.
Walkers are welcome if they can finish the race in the specified time limit for each race. The limits are 6 hours and 30 minutes for the full marathon and 3 hours and 15 minutes for the half and relay.
What are the course details?
The courses are USATF-certified, which allows runners to use the full marathon course to qualify for the following year’s Boston Marathon. Qualification is NOT required for entry into the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon or Half Marathon.
The course starts in Oceanport at Monmouth Park (location of central parking and the Expo) and ends on the oceanfront Promenade just north of Pier Village and opposite the stage on The Great Lawn. The half marathon is a 13.1 mile run which travels through many of the business districts and neighborhoods of Oceanport, Monmouth Beach and Long Branch. The marathon features a point-to-point course that includes areas of Oceanport, Monmouth Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Asbury Park and Ocean Grove. The courses have no significant hills and are virtually flat (with a few very gentle rolling stretches and bridge crossings). They are very fast and flat courses. Every year many participants obtain new PRs!
Is there an official race Expo?
Yes, the Diadora Race Exposition for the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon will be held on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at Asbury Park Brewery. This two-day exposition is free and open to the public as well as all participants of the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon events. We are expecting 10,000 athletes to attend, plus many more thousands of spectators. If we have not sold out, we will be accepting last-minute race applications during the Exposition (no registrations on race day). Visit our Fees page to view race prices.
The Expo hours are scheduled for Friday from 3:00PM – 9:00PM and Saturday, from 10:00AM – 6:00PM Official Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon merchandise will be available for purchase at the Exposition and also on race day.
How do I receive my bib, timing chip, T-shirt and goodie bag?
These items WILL NOT be mailed to you under any circumstances. You may pick them up at the Exposition at Asbury Park Brewery during the following hours:
Friday, April 27: 3:00PM – 9:00PM
Saturday, April 28: 10:00AM – 6:00PM
Please note: While race packets must be picked up during the Exposition hours, they may also be picked up by another person. For athletes not arriving until race day, the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon is offering a Race-Day Packet Pickup Program.
How are the events timed?
The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon events will be electronically timed using a timing strip tag which will already be attached to your race bib. The tag will be read by sensors on the ground as you run across at the designated distance marks. Half Marathon team members will be wearing bibs with the same race number, unique tags, and will hand-off from runner 1 to runner 2 in the designated zone. The timing tag must not be crimped, cut, or bent, and you can keep your bib/tag post-race, no need to return it to us.
Where should I park on race day?
The main parking for the Sunday races will be at/near Monmouth Park Race Track, at 175 Oceanport Avenue, in Oceanport, which is also the location of the start line. General access to the main parking areas is via Rt. 36 (the main access route from either Exit 105 of The Garden State Parkway, Exit 13B of Rt. 18 or Rt. 35). There will be plenty of FREE parking available.
We provide free shuttle service for spectators that runs between the start and approximately mile 9.5 of the race courses, which is also within four blocks of the finish area. Please help us keep traffic away from main parking, for both safety and your convenience by arriving at least 90 minutes prior to your race start, carpooling or taking the race-day bus to Monmouth Park.
Do you have a gear check or bag drop?
There will be a gear bag drop-off area near the start line and a bag pickup area near the finish line. Please watch for signs for “Bag Drop” and “Bag Pickup.” Since the start and finish lines are located in two different areas, bags will be transported to the finish area so athletes can have their bags available after finishing. The only bags that will be accepted at gear check are the race issued, clear plastic bags that will be given out at the Expo. No substitutions!
Please DO NOT leave valuables in your bag as we cannot be responsible for the contents of your bag and DO NOT leave your bag around the start or finish areas outside the official bag drop area. Bags left outside and unattended may be confiscated due to Homeland Security requirements. Any items dropped at the start line or along the course will either be destroyed by the authorities or donated to charity.
Do you have pacing teams?
The official pacers will be wearing bright pacing bibs on their front and back and carrying pennants with the group time. At the start area, look for the signs that display the various pace times in the corrals. Your pacer(s) will meet you at the appropriate sign. Visit our pace teams pages for the marathon or half marathon for additional information. Members of the Full Marathon and Half Marathon Pace Teams will be available to answer your questions at their booth at the Diadora Race Exposition.
- Please wear your bib on the front of your shirt as all runners do.
- FOUR finishers medals for the entire team will be given to the last runner/walker after they turn in the timing chip.
- Teams with walkers or slow runners are welcome to participate in these events, provided you are able to complete the entire race in 6 hours and 30 minutes from the time the first person crosses the start line until the second person crosses the finish line.
